How It All Began

Humphrey Yogart was founded by Maria and Raphael Baker in the mid-1980s. They started Humphrey's in the corner of a liquor store to test out the concept before committing to a brick-and-mortar location. The original Sherman Oaks location officially opened in February 1984.

In November 1986, Paula Armour purchased the Sherman Oaks location. The following year, her landlords introduced her to Jim Sheftel — and the rest is history. They married and together continued to grow and expand Humphrey's throughout the Los Angeles area.

When Paula took over, the only yogurt offered was Tart. She added Sweet Vanilla and Chocolate non-fat frozen yogurt, along with a variety of Ice Creams, Vegan, and Low Carb Low Sugar options. She made Humphrey's the legend it is today — with over 50 blend-in options to customize your sweet treats. The options and combinations are limitless. After working in the store for over 35 years, Paula passed the torch and retired from Humphrey's.

Humphrey's Today

Today Humphrey Yogart is operated by Catherine Ellis, born in 1987 — the year Paula took the reins. Catherine worked with Paula at Humphrey's from 2019–2021, then left to return to her roots in full-service restaurants. While back in the restaurant business, Catherine was called by Matthew Gallagher, the new owner of Humphrey's, to partner with him and operate the store. Catherine could not pass up the opportunity and eagerly signed on to keep the legacy of Humphrey's alive.

Catherine is dedicated to maintaining the quality that Paula created. While the look of the store has changed, the product has not — and will not. She has added catering to the Humphrey's experience and is growing that aspect of the business. Catherine hopes to open more locations in the future, as she believes everyone deserves a Humphrey's treat!
